Yorkie Names – Find Inspiration In Herbs And Spices

Are you looking for a great name for your Yorkie puppy? Who would have thought you could find the perfect Yorkie name in his herb garden or spice rack? In fact, you’ll find plenty of names to suit a Yorkie puppy from these sources, so let’s take a look right now…

First, as a little aside, I have to say that I started this quest of finding Yorkie names from a list of herbs and spices a little confusing at first, because I suddenly realized that I didn’t know the difference between an herb and a spice! ! I discovered after some research that herbs come from the leaves of herbaceous (non-woody) plants, while spices are obtained from roots, flowers, fruits, seeds, or bark. So sometimes both an herb and a spice come from the same plant: an example of this is fennel: the leaves of this plant are used as an herb, while the seeds are dried and ground for use as a spice.

herb names

So, about the names themselves – let’s start with a list of herbs that have names any Yorkie pup could wear with pride! Note that this is by no means a complete list of herbs – I have chosen not to include names that do not suit a Yorkie, such as Dill, Horehound, or Wormwood!

Let’s first consider culinary herbs: These herbs are used to flavor foods and beverages, and most people are familiar with many of them:

  • Basil
  • Bay
  • chives
  • Cilantro
  • Curry
  • Fennell
  • Marjoram
  • Oregano
  • Parsley
  • Rosemary
  • Sage
  • Tarragona
  • thyme

My favorites here are Basil, Curry (sounds like a puppy that never sits still!), Parsley, and Sage (the little wise guy who knows exactly what you’re thinking!).

I found an interesting list of ‘bitter herbs’ that are used for more medicinal purposes, and some of them are quite beautiful too:

  • Angelica
  • chamomile
  • Dandelion
  • (milk thistle
  • Street
  • Yarrow

Angelica is such a pretty name for a female Yorkie, and Thistle really appeals to me as a name for a male puppy.

Still more research led me to find even more herbs, some of which I had never heard of: again, these are mainly used in herbal medicine:

  • Aloe
  • Calendula
  • comfrey
  • Dittany
  • Hyssop
  • Wonderful
  • sagebrush
  • Street
  • tansy
  • Verbena
  • (sweet) woodruff
  • wormwood

Here are three that are simply adorable for puppies: Dittany, Tansy and Verbena – aren’t they beautiful? And boys are certainly not left out: I love the idea of a little Yorkie named Mugwort (I think he has shades of Harry Potter), and Woodruff appeals to me too.

spice names

Here’s a beautiful list of spices from around the world – let’s dive in!

  • Anise
  • Caraway
  • Cardamom
  • Cassia
  • peppers
  • Celery
  • Chile
  • Cinnamon
  • clover
  • Cumin
  • galangal
  • ginger
  • Jalapeno
  • Juniper
  • licorice
  • Myrrh
  • Mustard
  • nutmeg
  • Onions
  • Peppers
  • Pepper
  • Saffron
  • Sesame
  • Tabasco
  • Tamarind
  • Turmeric
  • vanilla

Some of these are distinctly spicy and would do well with a pup who is never quite still – I can even imagine a bunch of Yorkie siblings named Chilli, Jalapeno, Paprika, Pepper and Tabasco! (If you needed a sixth name, I’d add Mustard!)

A lovely Christmas trio could be Cinnamon, Nutmeg and Myrrh – so pretty and fragrant!

Anise, Cassia, and Saffron are all delightful to female Yorkies, and Caraway, Licorice, and Onion are lovely to males, although clearly many of these names would work wonderfully for either gender (I’m just showing my own biases here!)

One name I kept off the herb list was Catnip – probably not a great name to give your Yorkie, but I can see situations where as a nickname it would be perfect!
