Things to Consider When Buying Baby Clothes

When shopping for baby clothes, there are a few things to consider. The first thing to consider is what time of year the baby will wear the clothes. You don’t want to buy shorts for a boy who will be born in the cold January. Most stores sell clothes a season in advance. For example, you’ll start to see long-sleeved fall clothing in August, although August can still be warm weather in many places.

A good option for any season are one-piece jumpsuits. They are gathered at the bottom for easy diaper changing and are available in different sleeve lengths and fit close to baby’s body. They are available in many colors and usually in packs of five or less. Simple whites are a good option to wear under other looser clothes or pajamas. This is useful for young babies who have a harder time maintaining a constant body temperature.

Until a baby begins to walk and thus becomes a toddler, shoes and socks are not built to last. They are mainly to keep little feet warm. Just like clothing, socks and shoes are usually categorized by general age groups, such as newborn, 0-3 months, etc. These numbers are just guidelines, so buy the size you think will fit you most comfortably.

A popular choice for couples shopping for clothes for their new child or buying as a gift are onesies or shirts that have cute sayings. Two popular ones are ‘mommy’s little rock star’ or ‘daddy’s first round draft pick’. They are usually found in the children’s section of department stores or on the Internet. While light blue is a common choice for young children, not everything has to be light blue. Consider finding royal blue or even another color for a change. Boys can wear green, red and yellow without being mistaken for girls.

A good idea is to buy for future growth. Children grow quickly and will need new clothes frequently. Even if the baby isn’t born, and it seems a long way away, couples may want to buy a few items for a 3- or 6-month-old baby to be prepared for when the baby outgrows the clothes they’re wearing. Baby boy clothes should be pretty easy to shop for if you keep these basic things in mind when shopping.
