pH shampoo experiment

I have long been aware that our skin (including our scalp) is supposed to be slightly acidic. Just very slightly. I’ve also heard before that using a very weak vinegar rinse after shampooing will restore the PH of the hair to what it’s supposed to be, making it shiny and smooth. So, I was wondering about using a PH balanced soap as a shampoo.

I had previously tried the baking soda in water method of washing hair, which should be followed by rinsing the hair in a mixture of water and vinegar. As I mentioned earlier, acidic vinegar will help with the health of your hair. After doing vinegar rinses, I noticed that it made my hair softer and smoother, but I really hated the smell (it’s sooooo unpleasant) and found it a bit annoying. Hey what can I say, sometimes I’m lazy

I saw an acid PH soap (it’s actually a cleansing bar, but it’s in bar soap form so I tend to call it soap) meant for skin and looked up information on how to use it as a shampoo as well, but couldn’t really find any testimony or personal experience. Only people advising that it should be fine (without having tried it themselves).

So, I decided to be brave and try a little experiment for myself. I went ahead and bought some PH balanced soap and started using it on my skin at first. So far so good. It left me clean and not too dry.

Then I tried it on my hair. It lathered up surprisingly well and didn’t give me that “grabbing” feeling I’d previously experienced when I had to wash my hair with regular Irish Spring bar soap/detergent (by the way, regular soap like that makes your hair ugly as f*ck if you don’t already know). I was relieved that there was no harsh “grab” feeling.

So during the washing process it felt like a regular shampoo. During the rinse it felt like a regular shampoo. And during the drying process I felt as if I had washed my hair with normal shampoo!

However, there was a slight difference when it dried. I think it made my hair a bit softer than normal. Hurrah!

I am happy to use low PH soap on my hair for several reasons:

1. Takes up less space in the shower

two. I think it makes my hair a bit healthier and softer to the touch.

3. It’s easier to travel since I’m using a PH bar soap/cleansing bar

Four. I am happy that I found such an effective 2 in 1 product. Effective product and 2 in 1 are not usually put together in the same sentence!

For those of you wondering, I am using Nature’s Plus – Natural Beauty Cleansing Bar, 3oz Boxes, which is a great “soap” bar, but liquid soaps and cleansers are also available.
