The glycemic index and alcohol

You asked why alcoholic beverages don’t have glycemic numbers. Are alcoholic beverages not created from ingredients rich in carbohydrates? In reality, most alcoholic beverages, such as hard liquors, wine, and beer, contain little or no carbohydrates. Interesting, right? I will point out that the glycemic index has chosen an arbitrary number of 100 with a number of 70 and above called high glycemic and those between 56 and 70 are called medium and below 55 the score is low. Some foods and drinks are too low to include.

Although some hard liquors, such as Scotch whiskey, gin, and vodka, are made with high-carbohydrate ingredients, they do not appear in the index. These liqueurs contain things like sugar, potatoes, and grains, which are high in carbohydrates but the final product will contain zero carbohydrates, isn’t it confusing? But I know this is true due to the fermentation and distillation process of these liqueurs.
Now when it comes to wine, most of the sugar found in your grapes is converted to alcohol during the wine-making process.

When it comes to wine, a small amount of sugar will still remain in the final product. And now about the beer; Your beer is fermented during the brewing process, the maltose (which is sugar) found in beer is consumed by yeast and turns into alcohol. But there is a small amount of carbohydrates left, about three grams per hundred millimeters; this is a fraction of the amount of carbohydrates contained in equal servings of your sodas.

Keep this in mind that although alcoholic beverages are practically carbohydrate-free, they are all very high in calories. Alcohol alone has seven calories per gram. This is higher than the amount found in protein and carbohydrates and almost as much as that found in fats. And for the love of God, diabetics shouldn’t be fooled by their low carb count, because they are at risk of low blood sugar every time they drink alcohol.

What does this all mean? Well, it is very likely that excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages will accumulate many kilos. And we’ve all heard and probably seen what it will do to someone’s liver, maybe even yours? As always, you must live well to be well.
