London is the capital of England and the United Kingdom, while Greater London is its highest administrative subdivision. London has a history dating back to the Romans, who founded it in AD 43. The ancient City of London still retains its medieval boundaries. It is the most global city in the world and the largest financial center along with Japan and New York City.
UNESCO has granted some of its buildings World Heritage status, namely Kew Royal Botanic Gardens, Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey, St. Margaret’s Church, and the Tower of London. London is easily accessible by air and has the largest public transport network. People from all walks of life, from various countries, speaking numerous languages reside in London.
Greater London is divided into thirty-two boroughs, each governed by a London Council and follows exceptional governance dating back to the 12th century. It has two royal boroughs, namely Kingston and Chelsea and Kensington.
London has a two-tier local government: a strategic level and a local level. The strategic level or city administration is run by the Greater London Authorities, while local administration is run by thirty-three local authorities. The Greater London Authority is an elected body made up of the Mayor of London and the London Assembly.
London boasts of the oldest zoological gardens, Madame Tussauds wax museum and many central parks. Some parks like Hyde Park have a long history behind them and host popular sports and outdoor concerts. Architecture in London ranges from medieval to postmodern.
Entertainment in London and Greater London includes theatre, opera, circus, films, ballet and concerts. There are some annual events like the New Years Parade etc. London is home to many great literary works, writers, actors and musicians. Its museums and galleries attract tourists from all over the world.
