Checking your oil

It is important to check your engine oil frequently. To do this, make sure the engine is cold and the car is on a level surface. Remove the oil dipstick, wipe it off with a clean rag, then reinsert it. Pull it out again and check the oil level against the marks on the dipstick. It should be at the “full” mark and the color should be brown and clear.

If the oil level is below “full”, it would be advisable to top it up. Be sure to use the same type of oil that is currently in the car and remove the crankcase cover. To pour some oil into the case and allow some time for the oil to seep into the case, check the oil level again. Take care not to overfill the motor.

If the color of the oil is black and dull, then it is time to change the oil. Old motor oil loses its viscosity and builds up residue that can damage your engine. Changing the oil in your car is not very difficult and is something every car owner should know how to do. Simply drain the oil from the car, either by removing the drain plug under the engine or through the oil filter. Use a pan to catch the oil until it has completely drained from the car, then replace the plug or insert a new filter. Next, check your owner’s manual to see how many quarts of oil your car needs, and fill it from the crankcase as if you were topping it up. Love your car and your car will love you.
