one. In love (2001) – Directed by Jamie Banks and starring Denise Richards and Marley Shelton, Valentine is the perfect slasher movie to watch on universal romance night. It tells the story of school nerd Jeremy Melton who, at a Valentine’s Day dance in 1988, is rejected by four of the most popular girls of the school year for a dance. Finally, a rather shy and overweight girl agrees to a dance. Later, the couple is discovered in a passionate embrace by a gang of school bullies. In a fit of shame, the fat woman falsely accuses the bullies that Jeremy has assaulted her. This leads to the bullies stripping down and attacking poor Jeremy, humiliatingly in front of the entire school.
Thirteen years later, as Valentine’s Day approaches, the five girls responsible for causing Jeremy so much pain are now trying to get their love lives in order. One of them, after a disastrous date, is killed by an assassin wearing a Cherub-style mask. Disturbingly, he had received a death threat in a Valentine’s card only days before she was killed. The other girls also receive similar cards, as the killer lies in wait for his next potential victim.
2. my bloody valentine (1981) – Probably the ULTIMATE Valentine’s Day horror movie, and the one that always comes to mind when contemplating a proper Valentine’s Day cooler. In 1961, in the isolated town of Valentine Bluffs, five miners are trapped in a shaft after a methane gas explosion, the result of the careless actions of the foreman, who had come to attend a Valentine’s Day dance. The sole survivor was Harry Warden, who was pulled from the wreckage after staying alive for six weeks by binging on the corpses of his dead colleagues. This trauma had caused him to lose his mind, resulting in his being taken to a mental hospital.
Twelve months later, he escaped to attend the Valentine’s Day dance, where he murdered the incompetent foreman. She then issued a chilling warning that if the town held a Valentine’s Day ball again, he would be back to wreak more havoc.
Twenty years later, when the legend of Harry Warden has almost faded from people’s memory, a group of young miners and their girlfriends are organizing a Valentine’s party. But his plans are overshadowed by the presence of a sinister and mysterious figure, dressed in miner’s clothing and armed with a pickaxe. This figure has infiltrated the city with only one thing on his mind: murder.
my bloody valentine is a low-budget cult movie that has generated a lot of controversy over the years. It’s also been heavily sliced into parts, which isn’t surprising considering the sheer amount of blood and gore it contains, as the maniacal miner mercilessly slices and dices through a series of victims. The film was remade as a 3D version in 2009, starring supernatural Jensen Ackles in the title role.
