Why Knorights is at ‘war’ with the Federal Housing Authority

Defending the poor and the voiceless in our society is a task that must be done for God and humanity.

In our world, with around 7 million people, the weak and the poor, who are the majority, must protect themselves from the strong and the powerful.

Yes, there are millions of concerned people, non-governmental organizations, corporate entities and government agencies, etc., who are doing their part to advocate for the poor and the weak.

This is godly, humane, and therefore acceptable.

In Nigeria, with an estimated population of 180 million people, these helpers are helpful by thousands, if not millions.

Comrade Olusegun Adeeko, President / Lead Activist, Meet Your Rights Initiative, Ikotun, Lagos, is one of many people.

He maintains a hard-line stance against economic crime, corrupt practices and human rights abuses. Call it a one-man riot squad, if you mind.

On Monday, Adeeko invited me to cover a peaceful protest by members of her NGO and mechanics in the town of Festac in Lagos, Nigeria.

Peaceful posters with members of the knights and mechanics held the protest at the southwest zonal office of the Federal Housing Authority in the city of Festac, Lagos, Nigeria.

Their mission was to demand that the housing authorities investigate the manner in which Ms. Aisha Onotu, allegedly colluding with the police in Festac and suspected land grabbers to sell land in the buffer zone, illegally to interested persons.

The background check conducted by this writer revealed that 12 years ago, Festac City Residents Association officials observed that people in the home were illegally selling land to some people.

The residents dragged the housing authority before a Lagos Superior Court on November 21, 2005 in complaint No: ID / 2494/1993.

12 years after the legal battle line, Hon Justice (Ms) Y. A Adesanya handed down her sentence and the court asked the mechanics union members in the Festac buffer zone to still occupy their jobs.

But, the leader of the knights in a letter dated April 18, 2019, submitted a petition to the independent commission of corrupt practices, requesting that the area manager of the federal housing authority in southwestern Nigeria be investigated.

The manager, Onotu, is alleged to be corroborating with one Thomas Tanimowo to issue a rent to illegal awardees and also to issue a removal notice to mechanics to vacate the land, despite the higher court ruling.

This writer visited the federal housing authority office on Friday to see and hear from the area manager on the matter, but was told that the woman had left her official assignment.

Police at various levels in our country have been informed and the national headquarters of the federal housing authority in Abuja, Nigeria, is also aware.
