Renault renews its Indian presence with the Fluence

After a rather hesitant start with the Logan in India, Renault has shaken off the styling stigma by launching the Renault Fluence.

Renault Fluence, available with a 2-litre petrol engine and a 1.5-litre diesel engine, is a feature-packed car, although the petrol version is much better than its diesel counterpart. Equipped with a 6-speed VT automatic transmission for the petrol variant, the Fluence is not yet available with a manual transmission. The petrol variant also includes a wide range of features including dual-zone air conditioning, automatic headlights and rain-sensing wipers, keyless start/stop, an on-board computer, leather seats, four airbags and anti-whiplash head restraints. Cabin quality is impressive and the plastics add a rugged feel to the interior. However, the diesel version also lacks a good kit. The Fluence has a 2,703mm wheelbase, which is longer than other cars in its category. That translates to fantastic legroom, but poor support under the thighs and limited headroom in the rear.

The new improved Renault Fluence E4 D

Renault has tried to eliminate all complaints with the previous diesel variant by launching this new and improved diesel version. The two main flaws of the previous diesel version were the lack of an equipment list and the car’s drivability. The release of the E4 version has fixed these problems to a great extent. Under the E4 guise, the Fluence gets a host of goodies like cruise control, rear parking sensors, Bluetooth telephony, and automatic headlights. Leather upholstery is another added feature that enhances the luxury quotient.

The diesel engine showed signs of turbo lag below 2,000 rpm, which was followed by a sudden increase in power over the previous diesel variant. This nature of the engine made it quite difficult to drive the car in city traffic. The engine has now been fitted with a new fuel injection system for more precise injections. The variable geometry turbocharger blades have also been optimized to improve performance at different engine speeds. Modifications to the engine have worked well, as has the driveability. All in all, the new Renault Fluence E4 D is a success!

Renault Fluence’s all-new diesel variant is available for Rs 15.2 lakhs with an average mileage of 18.6 km/l, while its petrol counterpart is available for Rs 15.27 lakhs with an average mileage of 10.3 km/l. The Renault Fluence, both in gasoline and diesel, is a good option to buy in this segment and at this price.
