Fix Windows 7 error 1606

Error 1606: The network location could not be accessed

When installing programs like Adobe Acrobat, Java, and ITunes on Windows 7, you may get the above error. In such a situation, the setup program stops automatically and displays the above error.

The error persists because either or both of the following registry subkeys are broken:

Yo. HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerUser Shell Folders

ii. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerUser Shell Folders

Solutions:

1. Fix the Registry using a Registry Repair Software

2. Manually repair broken registry subkeys

3. Download patch

4. Change the Microsoft Office installation root directory in the Registry

5. Backup and Delete Microsoft Office Registry Entries Temporarily

Fix the Registry using a Registry Repair Software

Not only the above subkeys but also more types of broken subkeys can be fixed using a good registry repair program. First, a registry cleaning tool will scan all or part of the registry for hidden Windows problems. Then it will fix Windows 7 error 1606. To regularly keep your registry healthy, you should run a registry scan at least once a week.

Manually repair broken subkeys in the registry

1.Click Start | To run.

2. Type RegEdit and press ENTER.

3. Navigate here: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerUser Shell Folders

4. Right-click on the Recent key and select the Delete option. [What you need to do is delete the key containing the path displayed in the error message.]

5. If the error persists, perform the same steps 1-4 on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

6. Close Registry Editor and restart the computer.

Change Microsoft Office Installation Root Directory in the Registry

1.Click Start | To run.

2. Type RegEdit and press ENTER.

3. Navigate here: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftOffice[Version Number]CommonInstall Root

4. Double-click the string named Path. [If there is no such string named Path, then create a new one.]

5. Enter the Microsoft Office root installation directory. The following are the examples:

has. Office 2000 – C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice

b. Office XP (2002) – C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice10

against Office 2003 – C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice11

d. Office 2007 – C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice12

6. Press ENTER or click OK.

7. For each version number found in the registry, perform steps 4 and 5.

Backup and delete Microsoft Office registry entries temporarily

Before you run the setup program for software that displays error 1606, make a backup copy of and delete the Microsoft Office software registry entries.

1.Click Start | To run.

2. Type RegEdit and press ENTER.

3. Navigate here: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftOffice

4. Right-click the Office subkey and select the Export option.

5. You will be prompted for a location to save the registry entries in a .reg file.

6. Type C:Backup_MSOffice_Registry.reg and press ENTER.

7. Wait until the backup procedure is complete.

8. Right-click the Office subkey and click the Delete option.

9. Confirm the action when prompted.

10. Close Registry Editor.

11. Run the setup program for the software that received the 1606 error. It will no longer display the error.

12. Restore Registry Editor.

13. Click My Computer.

14. Double-click drive C.

15. Double-click the file named Backup_MSOffice_Registry.reg and confirm the action to merge the file information with the system registry.
