Cillit Bang Remixed (10 Hours Of Classic Dubstep)

Cillit Bang Remixed

Cillit Bang Remixed is the third installment of the Killarney DJ mixes series and focuses on what the artist calls ‘Avant Garde Music’. ‘Avant Garde’ refers to a style of electronic music that owes more to the likes of DJs such as Afrojack and Paul Webster than traditional dance producers. The music comes from an era of raw, unpolished musicality, and is sometimes said to have been born out of listening to early hip-hop records. This new breed of producers have used this raw form of expression to create an entirely new sound. What is Cillit Bang Remixed? ‘Avant Garde’ is simply a collage of unreleased tracks, featuring samples from the likes of Boards of Canada, Boards of Static, and Echosmith (not to mention vocals from John Paul Jones and Neuvation Band instrumentals).

One thing that’s very noticeable about Cillit Bang Remixed is how it doesn’t try too hard to be hip-hop. Its beats echo around the house, and the core genre seems to be the drifting rhythm behind the beat, rather than some forward spinning, propelling movement. The production is simple and raw, with little in the way of overdubs or other features, and there’s no sense that any of the artists involved are going for a commercial sound. They just happen to have a style that works really well together.

What’s great about this mix is that it skips the usual predictable trap of dubstep with a surprising amount of space left over for non-dubs. The bassline in particular is exemplary, retaining a sense of space while sounding robust and exciting. What is even better is that Cillit Bang Remixed sounds surprisingly modern, with a sound that’s not totally different to that of producers such as Diplo and Benga. It’s difficult to imagine it existing in any other than a genuinely unique blend of cumbia beats and dub, with a slight twist.

What you’re probably most likely to find on Cillit Bang Remixed are the best cuts. This isn’t a song where you’re going to be ripped off or completely confused by what’s happening next. Instead, by the end of the first half hour or so, you’ll know exactly what’s coming next, and what you’re going to be prepared for. It’s an hour that could have been incredibly boring, but Cillit Bang Remixed manages to keep things interesting, and doesn’t let a lack of quality ruin the fun. Instead, the music maintains its energy, until it reaches the crescendo at the end of the second half.

What do we make of this? At first listen, it might not seem like Cillit Bang Remix has much of a character, but on closer inspection, you’ll find that this isn’t a typical dubstep song. Instead, it holds its own, with none of the usual suspects showing up. Instead, this is a track that has real staying power, retaining listeners’ interest long after they’ve heard it a couple of times.

You can also take this as another sign that Alex Wimmer is one of the most exciting talents in modern dubstep. With no obvious signature sound, this track stands out from the pack, creating an atmosphere that’s genuinely unique. By creating a sound that’s entirely his, he ensures that his fans will feel like they’re experiencing something new and unusual. And the best bit is… You won’t hear this song on many other DJ’s music mixes.
