The Durex Condom Commercial makes for an interesting contrast in tone when you compare it with some of their other adverts. For something more risque and mature, the Durex condom commercial puts up its usual sexy and raunchy adverts for something less mature and raunchy. Set up like a short piece featuring two young boys urinating down a hill, the intention of the ad is to show just how durable the Durex condom really is. This kind of humour seems to be a favourite with teenage girls who may prefer the risque humour of cartoons or mime movies over the risque content of adult films or pornography.

The ad shows two young boys walking along a wet sandy beach. One of them stops abruptly in the middle of the sand to pull out a Durex condom which is covered in sperm and mucus. As he unfolds it he catches his breath and then shoves it back in his mouth. A loud, disgusting noise interrupts his train of thought and he drops the condom back in his mouth. A trail of sperm is visible and he grimaces as he laughs maniacally.

The second boy is shown to be waiting by the same beach. He also removes his protective condom, removes his shirt and quickly removes his pants. As he stands there with his shirt off and his pants down, he demonstrates how easy it is for condoms to fall out of your hand. His aim for the audience is to demonstrate that even if protective condoms are used it is not impossible for them to come out of your mouth. By the end of the ad both boys have condoms in their mouths and are shown dancing around at the beach with their partners.

A Look at Some Durex Condom Commercials

In the second spot the two condom carrying men have just completed a day on the beach. They take off their shirts and stand around naked while explaining the benefits of Durex condoms to a curious onlooker. The adverts focus on the fact that not only do they protect you when having sex, but that Durex condoms make your lovemaking more enjoyable because they feel better when you use them. The adverts go on to say that many couples who use condoms for the first time will be so impressed they will tell all their friends about Durex. It is at this point the realisation dawns that the boy doing the talking in the adverts could just be their son or cousin and the girl in the adverts could be their daughter or friend.

The two men carry on discussing the various parts of a condom, how they can fit together and what colour goes with which colour and finally the one in the right hand condom has a question for the one in the left hand. He asks how he can pull the condom when he gets too close to his partner without risking getting his name stuck in it. The reply from the girl on the right hand side is that the Durex condom fits easily into her vagina and that she would not get the name stuck in it even if her partner did not have a condom on.

The whole advert was designed to be sexy and humorous and it worked perfectly. Many people are taking the joke about the sexual innuendo and using it to explain the benefits of Durex condoms to those that are in a position to buy them. This could work very well for condom makers like Durex who need to promote their brand and get people talking about them. Perhaps the commercial was meant as light-hearted fun and a sign that the company realise they might need a good public image in the coming years. If so then perhaps next time a condom advert appears on TV, it will be accompanied by a funny Durex condom commercial and no one will be any the wiser?
