What happens during a table shower (body scrub massage)?

Tabletop showers (or also called ‘Body Wash / Scrub Massage’) provide a truly exhilarating and relaxing experience. Better yet, apart from a moment of pampering, they bring much more to the “table” in the form of health benefits.

While many people may have heard of tabletop showers, many are unfamiliar with what exactly they are or what they can expect to occur during one.

We look forward to helping you draw your attention to the details so that you feel comfortable getting one at your local massage spa. We think you’ll see that it’s worth it, and may even wonder why it took you so long to realize it!

Where are table showers held?

Most massage spas tend to have individual / private showers where you receive your tabletop shower. Configurations may differ from company to company, but virtually all will have a massage table in the center of the room that has been fitted with a waterproof cover (usually plastic). Clean towels are placed on the table before each session for hygiene reasons.

Some tabletop shower rooms feature multiple shower heads directly on the tabletop that give the recipient a water-based massage or a cascading rain effect. Others will feature handheld shower heads that your masseuse will use for their session.

What do I wear during this type of treatment?

During tabletop showers, you typically don’t wear anything, but state laws generally require you to be covered at all times for the duration of your session. This is the same as most massage therapy regulations, except instead of being covered with a sheet, your private areas are covered with a towel.

What does the table shower treatment consist of??

This service provides a great help in keeping your skin healthy and clean because it is normally rubbed from head to toe (except in the obvious areas!) With an exfoliating sponge / cloth or cleansing body wash / scrub gel. Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from your body to expose the fresh, “younger” skin underneath. This helps prevent acne, ingrown hairs, and improves the overall appearance and health of your skin.

After lying face down on the table, your masseuse will bathe your body with water at a temperature that is set to your liking. Then comes the body scrub with gentle, massage-like movements. This helps not only to cleanse the skin, but it also helps increase blood circulation and induces a state of relaxation. Once finished, the final rinse arrives. Most spas that offer tabletop showers will also shampoo your hair if requested. Why not?

On average, most table showers last between 30 minutes and an hour.
