How to get better MPG out of your car

The cost of gasoline has been a constant concern for Americans, especially in recent years. For many, it is necessary to have a car to get to and from work and they simply cannot avoid the bomb. Many people have chosen to buy smaller, more fuel-efficient cars, and large, gas-guzzling vehicles are no longer important staples on the road, but sometimes that’s just not enough.

Here are 5 tips to get better MPG from your car:

Take care

If your safety and the safety of your passengers (and others on the road) isn’t reason enough to drive safely, it also helps save gas. Fuel consumption decreases the faster you drive. Really, is a few minutes going to make a big difference? Because it can make a difference to your wallet. Other forms of aggressive driving like rapid acceleration and constant braking also waste gas. If you have a speeding problem, consider using your cruise control on the highway and set it to a reasonable (and safe!) Speed.

Don’t live out of your car

Actually living in your car will not affect your MPG, but carrying all of your belongings in your car as if you lived in it. The more weight your car has to carry while driving, the more it affects your MPG. Think about it: do you really need to keep your golf clubs, camping gear, and tool kit in the car at all times? Every little bit adds up.

Keep up with maintenance

Follow the maintenance guidelines in your car manual. Problems can arise if your car doesn’t get the care it needs. Not only will it run smoother and last longer, but problems that are not fixed can affect your MPG.

Check your tires

It is a good habit to check your tires daily. It is important to keep your tires inflated to the proper pressure level. Under-inflated tires reduce gas mileage. Remember, underinflated does not mean flat. Even if it is a bit low and you can still drive it, it still affects your MPG.

I did not use it

For some, this is almost impossible. However, if you can, try carpooling with others or use public transportation a few times a week. For short trips, consider walking or biking to your destination. It’s good for your car and it’s good for your health!
