Hazards of rust

What is rust? Rust is what is called oxidation in scientific circles. This occurs when oxygen comes into contact with metals. The mixture weakens the metallic bonds, which results in corrosion. This makes the metal essentially weak and prone to collapse. Not to be scientific about it, rust occurs when metal is exposed to moisture. Once the paint breaks down, it allows moisture to seep in and over time, rust develops. That is why it is always advisable to diligently check metal items and clean them when rust is discovered. Rust needs to be removed thoroughly as it spreads all over the metal and you would end up with a useless item on your hands.

Rust is a natural process that can be intentionally prevented only with extreme care and diligence. However, once it occurs, it is quite a challenging task to remedy it and prevent it from spreading. What are the effects of rust? It weakens any metallic surface. It results in decomposition and causes materials to fall apart. It’s pretty annoying when it happens to a small item like keys, but its size doesn’t determine its level of danger. A rusty nail or bolt on its own poses minimal risk if it doesn’t come in contact with you, but what if it holds together a regularly used structure? What if that screw supports a material that is used to carry heavy loads? The material would most likely collapse and cause injury and property loss. What about rusty bolts precariously holding a flange? Just imagine the strain on a bridge with millions of cars passing over it every day. And what a disaster it would be if it collapsed. There is that particular case of a group of university students partying on the balcony of an apartment. The structure was unable to support the weight and gave way, causing some of the students to fall to their deaths. Although not actually tested, there may be a chance that oxidized materials may have been a factor.

Another danger presented by rust is the possibility of becoming infected with tetanus. Rust is associated with dirt and certain forms of bacteria. It becomes dangerous when rust comes into contact with an open wound. There is a risk of contracting tetanus, which can be, in the worst case, fatal.
