Experience Safari bundles with a difference

When you think of going on safari in Africa, you usually think of traveling by jeep, but you might be surprised to learn that there are other great options available.

1. Self driving

For the seasoned adventurer, family groups, and those on a budget, a self-drive safari through South Africa’s national parks (no self-driving in private parks) will appeal. A 2WD will be fine for travel in most parks, though if you want to go off road, a 4WD will allow you to see more.

The downside of autonomous driving is that you lose the experience of a guide and have to rely on your own navigation skills.

2. Hot air balloon

This type of safari is becoming a very popular option although they are of course the most expensive style of safari. Most balloon rides last around an hour and are usually accompanied by a champagne breakfast or dinner (depending on what time of day you fly).

3. Safari on foot

Typically for small groups, walking safaris range in length from an hour long, usually in the morning or early evening, to day treks with accommodation in a lodge or safari tent.

These types of safaris are completely safe as the group is accompanied by an armed guide. Imagine walking through the vast savannahs and seeing a pride of lions and being able to observe them up close!

4. Elephant Safari

There are a good number of game reserves that offer an elephant safari. The big benefit is that you are more likely to watch a game on top of an elephant because animals are more used to elephants than they are to humans and vehicles.

An experienced elephant trainer is in charge and the safari usually lasts an hour and a half and often includes food and drink as well. On some tours you may also be lucky enough to walk alongside the elephants, a truly remarkable experience.

If elephants aren’t your thing, several game reserves also offer horseback safaris.
